Phantom Blade Zero Reveals Interconnected World and Unique Map System at State of Play

By BOSS KG•August 18, 2026

During the latest PlayStation State of Play, developer S-Game finally pulled back the curtain on Phantom Blade Zero’s mysterious game world, offering fans a rare peek at environments that have remained largely under wraps until now. The studio revealed eight distinct maps, all connecting to form a single, cohesive world that promises both variety and depth. Up until this showcase, most of the game’s regions and major characters had been kept secret, with only glimpses offered to those lucky enough to play early demos.

A strange, surreal world

The world of Phantom Blade Zero is described as intricate and surreal, featuring locations like bandit-ravaged valleys, puppet-filled warehouses where dark rituals take place, a steam-powered iron tower, and a vast lake navigable by a unique high-speed vessel. While the State of Play presentation only offered brief flashes of these areas, it was enough to establish the diversity and atmospheric character of the environments players can expect to explore.

A new approach to maps

One of the standout features unveiled is the game’s approach to maps. Instead of relying on comprehensive, detail-heavy guides typical of open-world games, Phantom Blade Zero provides eight hand-painted Chinese ink wash maps to guide the player’s journey. In complex regions, these stylized maps offer only general directions, encouraging exploration and rewarding curiosity with the chance to uncover hidden secrets. Fast travel is available through bells that connect discovered locations, adding convenience without sacrificing the sense of adventure.

Between linear and open-world

Phantom Blade Zero sets itself apart by neither adhering to a strictly linear path nor embracing a full open-world design. Developer S-Game demonstrated mechanics that include smashing obstacles and light metroidvania-style gating, suggesting players will need to revisit areas to unlock new paths or discover secrets. While it remains to be seen how deep this exploration goes, the game’s unique blend of structure and freedom marks it as one to watch for action RPG fans.
