Paradox Reveals Afterworld, a Post-Apocalyptic Grand Strategy Adventure
Paradox Development Studio is stepping away from its historical and spacefaring roots, unveiling Afterworld—an ambitious new grand strategy title set amid the ruins of a post-apocalyptic North America. Officially announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live and teased in yesterday’s leak, Afterworld looks to blend elements of Fallout and Mad Max with Paradox’s renowned strategy formula, serving up a survival-focused journey where players lead a tribe of survivors striving to tame a devastated continent.
Exploring a Ravaged World
Afterworld invites players to choose their tribe’s origins, including a Fallout-inspired start where you emerge from a bunker into the wasteland. Unlike previous Paradox games, the journey begins from absolute scratch: scrounging for essentials like food and water before securing your people’s future. As you roam the broken land, you’ll encounter powerful immortal leaders—known as the Ancients—who once ruled before civilization’s collapse and now vie for power using forgotten technology. Paradox says these Ancients may pose unique threats to your fledgling society.
Dynamic Systems and Emergent Gameplay
Exploration is at the heart of Afterworld. The game’s tech progression—known as the ideas tree—unlocks based on your tribe’s direct experiences. Where previous titles laid out tech trees or offered random selections, Afterworld’s innovations are learned organically: spot a river, and you’ll discover irrigation; meet another tribe with a religion, and you’ll develop knowledge of organized belief. Procedural generation ensures each new game delivers different tribes, dangers, and resources, keeping every survival story fresh. As you rebuild civilization or strike out as nomads, options abound for diplomacy, religion, migration, raiding, and harnessing advanced pre-Fall technology—including massive spider robots glimpsed in the reveal trailer.
