Nightdive Studios Lifts the Lid on Thief: The Dark Project Remaster and Its Notorious Engine
Nightdive Studios is hard at work on a remaster of Looking Glass Studio’s iconic stealth game, Thief: The Dark Project—and their journey has uncovered a trove of fascinating details about the game’s notorious Dark Engine. A recent Digital Foundry Retro Super Show offered fans a behind-the-scenes peek at how the remaster is progressing and why this classic’s tech foundation is both innovative and notoriously quirky.
Peeling Back the Layers of the Dark Engine
According to the Nightdive team, delving into Thief’s Dark Engine has been like an archaeological dig, exposing the raw, sometimes chaotic code that shaped the original release. Lead software engineer Josh Dowell noted that the team examined a “very very out of date version control repository for the code,” which provided clear evidence of the game’s turbulent development process. Dowell highlighted the colorful comments left by early programmers—ranging from urgent warnings about “giant hacks” to reminders to delete temporary E3 fixes—which, in many cases, are still lingering in code even in Thief 2. He explained that the initial development was handled by one team, but midway through, much of the staff transitioned off, leaving new developers to shepherd the project across the finish line—a shakeup that left its mark on the game’s DNA.
Technology Ahead of Its Time
Despite its patched-together origins, the Dark Engine was capable of some truly impressive feats, especially in terms of audio, AI, and lighting—areas where Thief pushed the boundaries in its day. Interestingly, Nightdive’s research also revealed that, under the hood, Thief shares surprising similarities with another first-person game engine of the era: Quake. From the approach to rendering to the method for toggling lighting, Dowell described the two as “eerily similar,” yet punctuated by notably strange differences unique to Thief. The combination has produced a game engine that, while idiosyncratic, remains one of a kind decades later.
