Marvel’s Wolverine Players Debate Scent Trail Feature, Calling for Option to Disable “Fart Gas” Visual
Marvel’s Wolverine is stirring up discussion ahead of launch—not just for its gameplay or story, but for a unique navigation feature that’s sparked controversy online. Players and reviewers are debating Logan’s “scent trail,” a visual effect that appears behind the character during certain segments, and some are calling on Insomniac to allow it to be switched off entirely.
The ‘Fart Gas’ Debate
The feature first made headlines earlier this summer, but the conversation reignited after reviews for Marvel’s Wolverine hit the web. Social media dubbed the bright trail behind Logan—and occasionally other characters—“fart gas” due to how it looks onscreen. The name stuck after a widely circulated post by a reviewer describing the effect, which he said remains visible even when some navigation assist options are turned off in the settings menu.
This led to confusion: while Insomniac’s accessibility options include toggles for chase assists and navigation lines, none fully disable the scent trail. As a result, some fans are asking Insomniac to reconsider and provide an off switch, particularly for those who feel the effect is immersion-breaking or makes exploration too straightforward.
Insomniac’s Response and Player Concerns
James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, clarified on social media that the scent trail does not remain on throughout the game. Instead, it appears only during key narrative moments, chases, or when Logan uses his canon mutant senses to track scents or sounds—such as following a person, clue, or collectible. When it comes to hidden items, Stevenson noted, players must still get close enough for Wolverine to “catch a whiff,” preserving a level of exploration despite the visual guide.
For now, players hoping for a toggle may be out of luck, as Insomniac hasn’t indicated plans to add that option. Some fans continue to suggest making scent vision an ability activated by the player rather than automatic, but the studio maintains this approach fits Logan’s lore best.
