Marvel’s Wolverine Director Responds to Gameplay Criticism After Latest Showcase
Marvel’s Wolverine, the highly anticipated PS5-exclusive from Insomniac Games, has found itself in the social media spotlight after its latest extended gameplay showcase. The new footage—highlighting story moments, character interactions, traversal, kinetic combat, and a dramatic boss fight against a Sentinel—was unveiled earlier this week and quickly met with intense scrutiny from fans online.
Community Critiques and Comparisons
Much of the online criticism zeroed in on certain gameplay choices. Logan’s use of a visible, red scent trail to track members of The Hand sparked comparisons to the yellow guiding paint often seen in other modern games, with some viewers poking fun at its stylized presentation. The voice acting featured in a heated exchange between Wolverine and Sabertooth also drew negative attention, with some fans finding it underwhelming. Meanwhile, the Sentinel boss fight footage ignited viral debates, with players noting similarities to older titles. One viral post compared the boss fight to a sequence from the 2007 PlayStation 2 game Ben 10: Protector of Earth, while others felt it echoed the design of the 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine game. Critics claimed these parallels made the boss encounter look uninspired and too familiar.
Insomniac’s Perspective and Hands-On Reactions
Director Mike Daly responded to the criticism in a recent interview, stating that Insomniac is “pretty used to” this level of response when working with beloved superhero properties. Daly emphasized that the studio’s priority was crafting “the best game for the character,” even if it means not checking off every expectation from the fanbase. He welcomed the discussion, noting it comes with the territory of superhero adaptations.
Despite the contentious online reaction, hands-on previews from press outlets have been more optimistic. According to early impressions, Wolverine’s combat is described as capturing the character’s essence and feels solid in action. While some questions remain about the gameplay’s long-term appeal, the in-person experience appears to be leaving a positive mark so far.
Marvel’s Wolverine is slated to launch September 15, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
