Insomniac Confirms No AI-Generated Assets in Marvel's Wolverine After Visual Glitch Controversy
Insomniac Games has responded to the latest controversy swirling around Marvel’s Wolverine for PlayStation 5, firmly stating that no generative AI was used for any asset in the game. The studio’s announcement comes after a viral video highlighted bizarre, glitchy bathroom signs that sparked AI worries within the community.
The Controversy Behind the Signs
The issue grabbed attention when a user shared footage of two melted-together bathroom signs in Marvel’s Wolverine, which many felt resembled AI-generated artwork. Fans, wary of AI’s growing presence in gaming, quickly speculated that these unusual visuals could be the result of generative AI. The images circulated widely and led to even more players raising questions about how Insomniac built assets for the anticipated PS5 exclusive.
Insomniac Responds and Explains the Bug
Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, James Stevenson, stepped in to clarify the situation directly. He explained that the odd bathroom signs were not the product of AI, but rather a “UV map bug”—a technical visual glitch. Insomniac has already begun work on a fix to resolve the issue and remove any similar visual anomalies from the game. The developer has made it clear once again: “There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine.”
This marks the latest in a string of minor controversies following Wolverine’s recent launch, coming just after fixes were rolled out for the game’s “Scent Trails” feature—a point of contention among fans. Despite online chatter and criticism of its linear story, Marvel’s Wolverine appears to be off to a strong start in terms of sales.
