Blizzard Unveils StarCraft Open-World Shooter at BlizzCon 2026, Launching Spring 2030
Blizzard has pulled back the curtain on the next big step for one of its legendary franchises, revealing a brand-new, original StarCraft open-world shooter during BlizzCon 2026’s opening ceremony. The upcoming game is slated for a spring 2030 release and marks the series’ first new standalone entry in around a decade. Dan Hay, known for his work on Ubisoft’s Far Cry series, introduced the project and described it as “something new” that puts players “down on the ground, in the mud, in the fire.”
A Grim First Look
The announcement was accompanied by a cinematic teaser (no gameplay footage yet) that set the tone: players follow a Terran recruit named Holt as he barely survives his violent first deployment on a Zerg-ravaged battlefield. While not officially confirmed, it appears Arcturus Mengsk’s voice resonates across the trailer, reinforcing classic StarCraft themes of sacrifice and duty. Blizzard’s website sums up the announcement simply: “it’s about damn time.”
Platform and Exclusivity Hints
One striking detail—only the Xbox logo appeared on the game’s “returns 2030” splash screen, hinting at potential Xbox exclusivity for Blizzard’s latest flagship title. If this stands, it signals Xbox’s ongoing strategy to retain high-profile exclusives within its ecosystem. Elsewhere in the BlizzCon showcase, Blizzard also pulled back the curtain on Diablo 5 (arriving spring 2029) and confirmed an animated Diablo series is in the works at Netflix.
